Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to Preside Over Lawyers’ Polls

Nairobi, Kenya: The Council of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has announced February 6, 2014 as its election date.
The LSK Secretary/CEO Mr. Apollo Mboya said that the election date is subject to confirmation by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
“The campaign period officially starts today (December 18, 2013) and ends on February 5, 2014,” Mr. Mboya said at the LSK Secretariat in Lavington, Nairobi.
Mr. Charles Kanjama, Mr. Eric Mutua and Mr. Ambrose Weda are battling for the Chairperson vacancy while Ms. Lilian Renee Omondi and Ms. Faith Waigwa Waguthi are contesting to be elected Vice Chairperson.
Members seeking seven Council Member positions are Mr. Abongo Kennedy Modi, Ms. Abuodha Jane Awuor, Mr. Alibhai Arshad Shamsudin and Ms. Angote Gertrude Nyausi.
Others are Mr. Chelanga Moses Kiprop, Ms. Chiggai Harriet, Mr. Gichuki Evanson Jaramba, Mr. Gichuhi Allen Waiyaki, Mr. Hunter Josiah Ogola, Mr. Juma John Oscar and Ms. Kabita Herine Akoth.
Mr. Kamande Wilson Murigi, Mr. Kenyariri Christopher Orina, Mr. Kibathi Moses Chege, Mr. K’opere Tom Oduo, Mr. Kosgey Alan Kibet and Mr. Kurauka Henry Athimbu are also seeking election as Council Members.
Mr. Matoke Samson Nyagaka, Mr. Mogusu Samuel Abuga, Mr. Mosota Ben Dennis, Mr. Mukui Jeff Kimata, Mr. Mtange Philip Kamidi, Mr. Mutembei Kennedy Marete and Mr. Mwamu James Aggrey are also vying to be elected as Council Members.
Other candidates include Mr. Mwara James Gitau, Mr. Olando Haron Were, Mr. Opiyo Alfred Ochieng, Mr. Rabala Donald Odhiambo, Mr. Rakoro Daniel Ouma, Ms. Shamalla Jennifer Mary, Mr. Theuri Eric Njeru, Mr. Wabuyabo Justus Ambutsi and Ms. Wanyaga Jane Wanjiru.
Members seeking election as two up country representatives include Mr. Kitiwa Godfrey Nathan and Ms. Wanyonyi Caroline Khasoa.
Two Members seeking one position as Coast Representative include Ms. Okumu Grace Akinyi and Mr. Wakahiu George Njenga.
The LSK Secretary/CEO Mr. Apollo Mboya said that six members are also seeking election to fill in three positions in the Disciplinary Tribunal.
The six are Mr. Itonga Mathew Kithinji, Mr. James Hosea Gitau Mwara, Ms. Mwaure Anna Ngibuini, Mr. Njengo James Mwangi, Mr. Ocharo Kebira and Mr. Otieno George Ochich Oliech.
The Secretary/CEO said that eligible voters are Members who hold 2013 valid Practicing Certificates (PCs) and will be required to produce identification documents.
“Eligible voters will produce National Identity Cards, LSK Identity Cards or their Passports,” Mr. Mboya said.
Mr. Mboya said that the voting centres will be communicated after liaising with the IEBC and requested candidates to download the electoral code of conduct sent to emails of Members.
“Any candidate and their agents who violate the Electoral Code will invite one or more of the sanctions provided therein,” Mr. Mboya said.
