NOTICE INVITING APPLICATIONS FOR THE CONFERMENT OF THE RANK OF SENIOR COUNSEL-2026

 

Pursuant to Rule 5 of the Advocates (Senior Counsel Conferment and Privileges) Rules, 2011, the Committee on Senior Counsel hereby invites members of the Society with the requisite qualifications and interest in the conferment of the rank of Senior Counsel to submit applications for consideration.

Applicants are required to submit their applications together with supporting information or evidence to demonstrate that they meet the criteria set out under Rule7 of the Rules.

Criteria for Conferment Section 17 of the Advocates Act (Chapter 16, Laws of Kenya) empowers the President of the Republic of Kenya to grant a Letter of Conferment to any person of irreproachable professional conduct who has rendered exemplary service to the legal profession and public service in Kenya, thereby conferring upon them the rank and dignity of Senior Counsel.

Pursuant to Rule 4 of the Rules, the Committee on Senior Counsel, comprising representatives of key stakeholders in the legal profession, is mandated to receive, consider, and evaluate applications from eligible members, and to make recommendations to the President for conferment of the rank.

Eligibility Criteria

Pursuant to Rule 7 of the said Rules, a person qualifies for conferment of the rank of Senior Counsel if that person—
1. Meets the requirements specified under Section 17(2) of the Act;
2. Is an active legal practitioner and undertakes training of other members in the legal profession;
3. Holds a valid practicing certificate or is entitled to act as an advocate under Section 10 of the Act at the time of making the application;
4. Has not been found guilty of professional misconduct by the Disciplinary Committee established under the Act;
5. Possesses sound knowledge of law and professional competence;
6. Has argued a substantive matter before a superior, regional or international court;
7. Is a person of integrity, irreproachable professional conduct and good character;
8. Has actively served the Society or other regional or international bar association to which the Society is a member or has undertaken community service; and
9. Has contributed to the development of the legal profession through scholarly writings and presentations;

Submission of Applications:

Eligible members are invited to submit their applications, together with all supporting documents and evidence demonstrating compliance with the above criteria, by:
1. Completing the online application form on the link https://forms.gle/vv1idm8jvFKkdecDA ; and
2. Submitting hard copies of the application and supporting documents in a sealed envelope clearly marked “SENIOR COUNSEL CONFERMENT” to the undersigned:

Deadline for Submission:
Both the online form and hard copy applications must be submitted on or before Friday, 16th October 2026 by 5:00 p.m.
